Researchers from the University of Munich recently reported that they were able to awaken an 82-year-old woman who’d been in a persistent vegetative state by using injections of her own immune cells.
The woman, who had suffered a stroke, had been cared for at home by her family and a home health nurse — for nine long years.
Then her doctors proposed an experimental new treatment, offering to give the octogenarian intramuscular injections of her own immune cells, specially activated in the laboratory to produce substances thought to modulate brain activity.
Remarkably, after ...

A U.S. Food and Drug Administration panel of outside experts concluded that OraSure Technologies Inc’s over-the-counter, in-home HIV test is reasonably safe and effective for determining whether someone has the AIDS virus.
The 17-member FDA advisory committee voted unanimously that the drug’s ability to prevent new HIV infections and provide HIV-positive people with access to medical care and social services outweighed the risks of false results.
Tuesday’s recommendations will now be considered by agency regulators as they determine whether the product, known as the OraQuick In-Home HIV Test, should be approved as ...

Up to half of teens and young women who give birth are pregnant again within a year — but a new study suggests giving new moms a contraceptive implant before they leave the hospital the first time around can help prevent those repeat pregnancies.
Contraceptive implants are placed under the skin, typically in a woman’s upper arm, and slowly release hormones.
In the U.S., the only contraceptive implant available contains the progestin hormone etonogestrel and is marketed under the brand name Implanon. It’s about the size of a matchstick and can prevent ...

An Indiana University-led research team, along with a group of national and international collaborators, has identified and prioritized a comprehensive group of genes most associated with schizophrenia that together can generate a score indicating whether an individual is at higher or lower risk of developing the disease.
Using a convergent functional genomics approach that incorporates a variety of experimental techniques, the scientists also were able to apply a panel of their top genes to data from other studies of schizophrenia and successfully identify which patients had been diagnosed with schizophrenia and ...

In order to determine whether smoking cannabis can have an effect on spasticity in individuals who do not respond well the existing treatment, the researchers enrolled 30 individuals to participate in the study. 63% of study participants were female, over 50% needed walking aids, and 20% used wheelchairs.
With warmer weather on the way, the Environmental Working Group has just released a new edition of their popular sunscreen guide.
In the sixth annual guide, the Environmental Working Group (EWG) recommends just 25% of 1,800 sunscreens they reviewed for the guide, though that number is up from 20% last year.
Some dermatologists take issue with the EWG’s approach. But they and the EWG agree on this much: It’s not about whether you should wear sunscreen.
“We were happy that we were able to recommend more products this year than in previous years, ...

“You are what you eat.” This is a well known phrase that has been mentioned many times in discussions related to health and nutrition. A new report discusses how the combinations of what you eat can affect your consumption, and also how the diet choices you made as a child could affect the diet choices you make as an adult.
Two researchers, T. Bettina Cornwell of the University of Oregon (UO) and Anna R. McAlister of Michigan State University (MSU), recently found that water could change the way that people eat. ...

A New York Stem Cell Foundation (NYSCF) scientist has shown in new research that human embryonic stem cells can be used to grow bone tissue grafts for use in research and potential medical applications.
Dr. Darja Marolt, an investigator at the NYSCF, is the lead author of the study, which was published this week in the online edition of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS).
It is the first example of using bone cell progenitors derived from human embryonic stem cells to grow compact bone tissue in quantities large ...

It is thought that medication use and certain psychological and psychiatric conditions can trigger sleepwalking, but the exact causes are unknown, writes Louise Chang, MD for WebMD. It is not fully known how widespread the problem is, however.
Wandering around at night can ...
